Chief of Staff-Style Support

For CEOs and senior leaders seeking extra capacity to bring their vision, priorities, and projects to life. Read on for an example of my Chief of Staff-style work.

The need

Adriana, the CEO of a Los Angeles-based network of K12 schools, had important projects she wanted to advance within her organization, like a new teacher residency program, an org-wide communications strategy, and new systems for working with her boards, but her day-to-day responsibilities to students and staff were consuming. Important but-not-quite-urgent projects — particularly those that didn’t fall cleanly into anyone else’s job description — were at risk of losing momentum or being put on the backburner altogether. Adriana needed a strategic thought partner, plus capacity, energy, and expertise to see some of these projects through while she focused on her highest levers as CEO. The work needed a high level of rigor, strong attention to detail, and a background in schools and school systems, grounded in the values that are important to Adriana and the organization she leads.

The work

We collaborated to design a scope of work that gave Adriana’s leadership an immediate boost. I provided her with a combination of:

  • An external perspective and the ability to ask great questions

  • Strategic thought partnership and warm, gentle accountability

  • Rolling up my sleeves to drive critical work forward

Ongoing 1:1 sessions provided Adriana the space and outside perspective to better address challenges, improve systems and processes, and reflect on her own impact. And by assigning me to lead thorny and challenging projects, Adriana was able to be a more effective leader in the area that matters most: driving and realizing her organization’s overall mission.

The impact

The time I spent working with Jessica helped me stay focused on our organization's greatest priorities. She helped me clarify what I needed to do, and held me accountable (gently!) for seeing my priorities through to the finish line. ❞
